John Y. Simon received a Ph.D. at Harvard University in 1961 and came to SIUC in 1964. He teaches courses on the Civil War, Reconstruction, and Illinois history. Simon is the editor of The Papers of Ulysses S. Grant, twenty-eight volumes of which have been published to date. In addition to his work on this series, he has published other books, written more than one hundred articles, essays and book chapters, holds office in national professional associations, and serves as a consultant for federal and state agencies, university and commercial presses, and other editorial projects. The recipient of many awards, Simon maintains active research interests in Abraham Lincoln, the Civil War, and Illinois history.
